Top 10 Myths About Evolution

The Top 10 Myths About Evolution is a small book (200 pages), written by educators Cameron M. Smith and Charles Sullivan. The authors address what they consider the leading 10 myths about the theory of evolution. When I first picked up this book, I was unsure what to expect because the back cover lists various journals in which the authors have previously published. Both authors have published in that well-known scholarly publication called “Playboy”. Heck, an author can reach a broad audience there because of the sheer number of men who buy “Playboy” to keep up with their scientific reading. What serious intellectual does not have the latest edition of “Playboy” in his personal library?

In addition, the title of the book was a hint about the authors’ view of evolution. That is, evolution = neo-Darwinism, as if there is only one theory of evolution. To the contrary, there are theories of evolution, neo-Darwinism being the most popular one now in history.

“The Top 10 Myths About Evolution” is for readers who know little about evolution. I must say, despite my previous comments, the authors do a good job of explaining Darwinism. On the 10 topics discussed, I came away with a clear understanding of Darwinism, but an even clearer understanding of what is wrong with Darwinism. Of course, the authors do not see what I do as problems with the theory. After all, Darwinism is strictly science. Correct?

Still, there is a scientific basis for the truth of evolution. If one wants to understand something of the Darwinian version without having to wade through a tome by Theodosius Dobzhansky or Ernst Mayr, I recommend “The Top 10 Myths About Evolution” as a highly readable and well-organized introduction.

In later posts, I will explain some of the errors of the Darwinian account of evolution.
